
CAMBRIA COUNTY, Pa. (WJAC) — The Johnstown Tomahawks hockey team announced Wednesday they are now under new ownership.
In a statement sent to 6 News, they say the team was purchased by a group of local investors known as Tomahawks Hockey Partners, LLC. It said the new owners are committed to keeping the team in Johnstown and playing at 1st Summit Arena at the Cambria County War Memorial.
The statement said John Koufis is the majority investor of the new group and includes other investors Craig Saylor, William Polacek, John Polacek, Gary Poborsky, William Bahorik, Daniel Thompson and Chris Martella.
“Johnstown has a significant and unique historical relevance in the game of hockey. The group looks forward to working with the current team staff and everyone in the community to keep the Johnstown Tomahawks a continued source of pride for the entire region,” Koufis said.
Koufis is the CEO and Governor of the new ownership group.
According to the news release, Saylor has been a minority owner of the team since 2018 and will serve as President and Business Operations and Alternate Governor.
“Many memories were made during the days of the Jets, Wings, Red Wings, and the Chiefs and we embrace the responsibility of creating new, quality experiences for our players, fans, and sponsors. Our commitment and excitement will be on display throughout the year,” Saylor said.
The Tomahawks are a member of the North American Hockey League. The team said it is planning to have a public media conference later in May.
