STATE COLLEGE – A State College doctor who recently had his license suspended for 30 months was sentenced Thursday.

Kenneth Cherry Jr., who was accused of improperly prescribing controlled substances to a woman with whom he was having an affair, was sentenced to 18 months of probation and a day of community service on three misdemeanor charges of failing to keep proper records.

Cherry, 58, an orthopedic surgeon at University Orthopedics Center in State College, had his license temporarily suspended July 10.

Attorney General Josh Shapiro said in an affidavit in June that Cherry wrote 63 prescriptions on both UOC and Mount Nittany Medical Center prescription papers from November 2014 through May 2016.

The prescriptions included Oxycodone, Percocet, fentanyl, Adderall, Xanax and Ativan.

The woman, Mary Amendola, said Cherry would write her prescriptions without coming to the office, according to the affidavit.

Cherry has also been ordered to pay $750 in fines and the cost of prosecution.
