SOMERSET CO, Pa (WJAC) — Despite the annual Somerset firework show being canceled, over a dozen local businesses joined forces to find a new way to celebrate the holiday, all while staying socially distant.
One of the most popular ways to celebrate Fourth of July weekend is by watching fireworks, but this year’s firework shows are being put out across the region.
That’s when local business owner, Rick Sferro, of ServPro, came up with an idea.
“There were a lot of people that were upset. We didn’t want to lose the fireworks due to the coronavirus. A few of us were talking and we got together and organized a firework display for Somerset County.”
In just a few weeks’ time, the community came together to bring this firework show to life.
“A number of different businesses, organizations and individuals pitched in and we raised about $16,000 that will go towards the show, and it will be one of the biggest shows in recent time.”
The firework display will take place Sunday night from one of the highest points in Somerset, the Somerset Country Club.
The idea is to have people from across the area be able to watch from their homes, in order to keep everyone safe.
“So, there will be plenty of areas to view, everybody can socially distance and you won’t have to worry about large crowds being in one spot.”
Sferro also believes this firework display is about more than just the show itself.
“This weekend, we are celebrating our freedom as a nation, and we need to be celebrating that, especially in this time of the coronavirus and people disagreeing on things. We need to take some time and remember and celebrate that we are free, and that we can do this as a community and enjoy it.”
The firework show takes place Sunday, starting at 9:30 p.m.
