ORIGINAL: A Penn State fraternity has been temporarily suspended following the Saturday death of a teen visiting from out of town, university officials announced Tuesday.

State College police responded to an off-campus house on West College Avenue Saturday evening for a medical emergency, where 17-year-old John Schoenig was pronounced dead at the scene.

Penn State officials say the house was allegedly occupied by Chi Phi members, although it’s not the fraternity’s official house.

“State College police and the university’s Office of Student Conduct are investigating,” Penn State officials wrote in the release. “However, Penn State has issued an interim suspension of the Alpha Delta Chapter of Chi Phi fraternity, a member of the Interfraternity Council, until more information is known. The individual was visiting the area and was not a Penn State student.”

University officials say that the interim suspension means that the fraternity house loses all privileges as a recognized student organization pending the outcome of the investigations.

Officials say the university is providing support to students at Penn State who may be affected.

“Penn State offers deepest sympathies to the family and friends of this young man,” officials wrote.

Anyone with information is asked to call State College Police at 814-234-7150.
