President of Penn Highlands Community College resigns

Pennsylvania Highlands Community College President Walter Asonevich has resigned, according to the college’s board of trustees.

“The Pennsylvania Highlands Community College Board of Trustees has accepted Dr. Walter Asonevich's resignation as President, effective Friday, November 1, 2019. The Trustees and College would like to recognize and thank Dr. Asonevich for his commitment and efforts during his tenure as President over the last twelve years,” members of the board wrote in a statement Thursday.

This comes after Asonevich was suspended indefinitely earlier this month when a Facebook post that questioned the femininity of former White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders surfaced on social media.

The Board of Trustees said the post was "unprofessional, demeaning, and offensive," and did not reflect the community college's values.

In the interim, the college says it will be led by the President’s Cabinet with Vice President of Finance and Administration Lorraine Donahue as acting chairperson.

Just a couple of weeks ago, the college named three finalists for the next president and said the college was adhering to the original presidential search timeline.

Penn Highlands said Asonevich was originally going to retire in July of 2020.
