Officers create 'safe exchange zone' next to Johnstown Police Department

Driving through the city of Johnstown you may have noticed a new addition near the Johnstown Police Department.

Officers created a safe exchange zone along Washington Street.

The purpose of the parking area is to allow people to sell or exchange items safely, such as buying items off Facebook Marketplace or child custody drop offs.

The zone was created in response to a Facebook marketplace meet up which turned deadly earlier this month.

Similar areas have been considered successful in other parts of the country, and so Johnstown officers decided to create one in the city for people across the area to utilize.

“Myself, captain Miller and chief Pritchard came out yesterday, cleaned up the spot, laid some paint down,” explained Captain Michael Plunkard. “A week before, we went up and got a sign made up. Not a whole lot of investment here but I think it could be a very good thing if people use it and I would encourage people to use it.”

The safe exchange zone is located on Washington Street, next to the Johnstown Police station.
