The Johnstown BMX state qualifier race was held at Highland Regional Park on Saturday.

Hundreds of riders, ages 3 to 60, were separated by age and proficiency levels: novice, intermediate, expert, and professional rider.

Organizers say these participants travelled to Johnstown from all over Pennsylvania.

This is one of eight qualifier races in the state held from now through August.

Riders must complete at least five of eight races to qualify for the state final, which is held in Pittsburgh on August 22nd.

Tony Luther, the Assistant Track Operator for Johnstown BMX, said they had a better turnout than they expected.

"I think that's the biggest thing -- everybody is ready to get out, get back to a normal life, have fun, and be ready to put all that past behind us," he said.

John Slovikosky raced in the BMX event on Saturday who said people of all age groups who are interested should pursue it.

"Almost every kid has a bike, and they usually love riding it. I'd just tell them to come out and give it a try. If they need any help, there's always someone here to help them," he said.

Weekly races are held every Thursday night throughout the summer.

  • Registration starts at 6:00pm & racing starts at 7:00pm.
  • Registration fees: $10 pedals, $3 balance, $5 to practice.
  • Bikes can be provided to interested riders if they do not have their own.
