EBENSBURG, Pa. (WJAC) — UPDATE:
Former Johnstown pediatrician Dr. Jack Barto has been sentenced to 79-158 years in prison after pleading guilty/no-contest to inappropriately touching underage patients and family members.
Several of Barto's victims will address the media following the 9:30 a.m. sentencing, where they are expected to call for an independent investigation of Conemaugh Health Systems and Laurel Pediatric Associates, according to the group's representative.
Original Story:
A former Johnstown pediatrician who pleaded guilty to several child sex abuse charges will be sentenced Monday morning by a Cambria County judge.
Johnnie "Jack" Barto, 71, pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting family members and entered an "open plea" to various other sex assault charges in December 2018.
Authorities said most of the abuse took place in his practice at Laurel Pediatric Associates in Richland Township. Many of the victims were between the ages of 8 and 12, according to Attorney General Josh Shapiro.
Court documents show Barto was scheduled to be charged in January, but the sentencing was delayed until March.
A judge declared during the sentencing that Barto would be labeled as a sexually violent predator. The prosecution asked the judge to give Barto a prison sentence of 31-62 years.
*Editor's note: A previous version of this story incorrectly reported a maximum sentence of 358 years.
