Fetterman compares House to 'Jerry Springer Show' after heated AOC, MTG exchange

Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa., drew a comparison between the U.S. House and a tabloid talk show Friday following a tense House Oversight Committee hearing.

Thursday's hearing was organized to discuss holding Attorney General Merrick Garland in contempt for refusing to turn over audio of President Joe Biden's interview with former special counsel Robert Hur. Earlier that day, Biden asserted executive authority over the recordings.

The hearing devolved into chaos after Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., sparred over the Georgia Republican taking a jab at Rep. Jasmine Crockett, D-Texas, for her "fake eyelashes."

That is absolutely unacceptable," Rep. Ocasio-Cortez said. "How dare you attack the physical appearance of another person."Are your feelings hurt?" Rep. Greene shot back.Oh girl, baby girl, don't even play," Rep. Ocasio-Cortez responded.Oh really?" Rep. Greene asked. "Baby girl?"

Rep. Greene later asked Rep. Ocasio-Cortez why she won't agree to a debate before claiming the Democrat doesn't "have enough intelligence" to do so. The Republican said she would not apologize for either controversial remark.

Sen. Fetterman took to X Friday morning to weigh in on the matter.

"In the past, I’ve described the U.S. House as The Jerry Springer Show," the senator wrote. "Today, I’m apologizing to The Jerry Springer Show."

The post immediately drew criticism from Rep. Ocasio-Cortez, who said she "stand[s] up to bullies" instead of "becoming one."

"I understand you likely would not have stood up for your colleague and seem to be confused about racism and misogyny being a 'both sides' issue," the representative wrote to Sen. Fetterman.

"And to the women of Pennsylvania: I’d stand up for you too," she added.

Sen. Fetterman has repeatedly distanced himself from fellow Democrats in recent months, saying in December he does not label himself as progressive. The senator chastised members of his party in March for failing to condemn the actions of Hamas terrorists in Israel.

Earlier this month, Sen. Fetterman criticized a Biden administration decision to withhold weapons from Israel. The move came amid concerns the weapons would be used to invade the southern Gaza city of Rafah.
