Farmers' market kicks off season with opening day, while taking precautions

Because Governor Tom Wolf deemed farmer’s markets essential, the Somerset County Farmers' Market was able to begin their season on schedule, Saturday.

When organizers began planning for opening day of the Somerset County Farmers' Market, it wasn’t if they would open, but how they would do it safely.

“It’s great to be here. It’s reassuring to be here, an event that we have done 15 years now. But the lead up to this one was so different,” said Somerset County Farmers' Market board president, Todd Wetzel.

Organizers came up with several ways to make sure customers and vendors were safe, like setting up vendors further apart and asking people to wear masks.

“Anything on the tables that the customers can approach will be bagged. So, there will be a little more packaging,” said Wetzel.

During this time when grocery stores are packed and shelves are empty, farmers markets are filling those gaps.

“This was always the simplest way to get some food locally. And all of the sudden it is more meaningful then we wished it would be, but we are glad to be a part of it,” said Wetzel.

Customers who shop at the farmers market are also helping to support businesses in their backyard.

“It means a great deal. Our maple producer of course couldn’t sell at the maple festival, so she hasn’t been able to enjoy market sales until today,” said Wetzel.

“We are supporting each other we will never get through all of this. So, we are very fortunate that we have an amazing group of people who really support local farmers,” said Somerset County Famers' Market coordinator, Carol Pyle.

Being able to get out of the house and enjoy the farmers market, is just one step closer to a return of normalcy.

“it’s been a nice steady flow today. All of the vendors are getting interaction and people just love to talk so it’s nice to see people out and about,” said Pyle.
