Beaver Stadium sells beer inside to all fans for first time

Beaver Stadium finally began beer sales Saturday, at the Nittany Lions' game against Northwestern University.

Douglas Braff's been following this story since the proposal began circulating. He hit up Saturday's tailgate and spoke with some fans.

What was once limited to the suite and club areas of Beaver Stadium, is now available for all fans.

Fans we spoke with all say: It's about time.

Lackawanna County Resident Jason Seliga, while getting some beer inside, told 6 News, "I think Penn State is a little bit behind."

"I think it's okay," Penn State fan Terry Sewald also told us. "But when you get into the stadium, if you're thirsty and want to have a beverage such as that, why not go for it?"

Since beer sales inside the stadium were proposed, some have had concerns that this will lead to more rowdiness from Penn State students. But some people, like Nittany Lions fan Kelly Cushing, say there are deterrents against heavier drinking.

"I know the price of it's gonna be a little high," she said. "So, that will keep some away."

Although, will it keep these students away?

"Personally, I think it's expensive," said PSU student Samantha Tropp. "I don't think it's gonna really affect anything other than, like... I don't think the students are gonna have money to buy the beers. I think it's gonna really just affect parents and, like, alum."

One of her friends, student Katie Rios, said, "I mean, if it's cheaper, I'd like it better, but I don't know. It's cool."

But do people buy the argument that students will become rowdier?

"Kind of," Rios responded. "I feel like maybe, but also it would stop people from sneaking in alcohol."

Cushing touched on a similar point, saying, "Realistically, I know there's probably some that smuggle it in and they're drinking anyway. I don't think it's gonna get any worse than it already is."

"No, absolutely not," replied Sewald. "Because, by the time they get in there, they are gonna be rowdy if they're gonna be. I don't think another beer or two in the stadium is gonna much matter for them."

"I think the people who are gonna buy beer in the stadium are just here, you know, [to] have a beer before the game, have a beer during the game. I don't think it's gonna impact things either way," tailgater Mike Malkin told 6 News. "It's not the students that are gonna be getting beers in the stadium."

However — not Tropp, Rios, or their other friend, student Matt Shea.

Asked if they plan to buy any beers in the stadium, Tropp replied, "Maybe after this?"

Rios then chimed in to say, "Yeah, after this [interview] I'm inspired."

"[You] might have just convinced us," said Shea.

People can only buy two beers per transaction and sales stop at the end of the 3rd quarter, among other rules.
